Eustace is claimed by some to be the son of Bernard II de Balliol of Barnard Castle, however, most sources say Bernard had no children. Eustace was his cousin and inherited Bernard's estates due to Bernard not having any heirs.

Eustace was born Eustace de Helicourt and adopted the Baliol name after inheriting his cousin's estates.
