William was a close friend of William the Conqueror and was a leading advocate of the invasion of England. He was one of the commanders at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. As a reward he was granted vast lands in the west where he was to protect the borders from the Welsh. When William the Conqueror returned to Normandy in 1067, he appointed his half brother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux, and FitzOsbern regents.

William was killed in the Battle of Cassel in Flanders, while fighting on behalf of his wife Richilde, the widow of Baldwin VI "the Peaceable", Count of Flanders & Artois.
