Vazul (Vászoly), b. bef. 997, d. 1031/2

Father: Michael of Hungary, b. aft. 960, d. ABT 997

Vazul was held captive in the fortress at Nyitra (Nitra, Slovakia) and blinded, and had molten lead poured into his ears, possibly on orders of the wife of his cousin Stephen I, King of Hungary. Afterward his sons fled Hungary for Poland. While Béla stayed there and married Richeza, Levente and Andrew continued on to Kiev.

Some sources claim Vazul's sons were actually fathered by his brother Ladislaus the Bald, but those claims are not considered as reliable as the parentage shown here.

His wife was a member of the Tátony Clan, but her name is not known.

Michael was baptized, along with his brother Géza, in 972, as Michael; named after the Archangel Michael. Due to the number of descendants named Béla, it is believed that may have been his original name.

It is said that Taksony's mother was the daughter of Menumorut, a possibly mythical opponent of Hungary who was defeated by Árpád and forced to marry his daughter to Zoltán.

He is described in the Gesta Hungarorum: "Prince Zolta was a little lisping and pale, with soft, blonde hair, of middling stature; a warlike duke, brave in spirit, merciful to his subjects, sweet of speech, but covetous of power, whom all the leading men and warriors of Hungary loved marvelously."

It is also suggested by more modern historians that Zoltán was never Grand Prince, but simply stated as so in the Gesta Hungarorum due to all the later Grand Princes and kings of Hungary being descended from him.

Álmos may have had other sons.

The name of Álmos' father is not known for certain. Some historians claim that "Elöd is simply Hungarian for "ancestor", and that Ügyek comes from ügy, the Hungarian word for "saint" or "holy". However, in my opinion, a name deriving from a word is not sufficient to doubt that it is the name of a real person. However, since there is very little actual documentation about these families, it is impossible to know for sure who his father was.
