Robert supported the Empress Matilda during most of the civil war that began after his father died without a "legitimate" heir. He was the commander in chief of Matilda's army. Robert was captured by Stephen's forces, but since Stephen had been captured by Matilda's, he was returned in an even exchange. As Matilda's support dwindled, Robert became unable to continue her cause.

After the death of his wife, Mabel, Roger became a monk.
