This James Murray is often confused with his half-brother, James Murray of Dowally.

Although James' father John Murray 1st Marquis of Atholl never denied his children with Jane McClean the privledges of his position, he had several legitimate sons with his wife Amelia Stanley, who would inherit his titles and estates. This, along with the fact that James' brother George found himself on the wrong side of the King of England, James and his brothers George and John emmigrated to "the Colonies". They may have also been encouraged by their aunt Ann who had supposedly moved earlier.
