These backgrounds have a Nordic, or Viking, theme. They were made using images from Scandinavian countries dating from the Viking era and before.

This came from a 7th century brooch and was described as "a warlike face". It is used on the page of the Kings of Sweden.

Part of a 12th century church in Norway.

Another part of the 12th century church in Norway.

Part gold pendant from 6th century Sweden, part gold brooch from 11th century Denmark. It is used on a page of the Kings of Denmark.

From a silver cup found in Fejo, Denmark, made in the 9th century. It is used on another page of more Kings of Denmark.

This comes from a Germanic sun symbol from the Iron Age. Imagine the yellow part enclosed in a red circle. The black part was across the bottom of the stone, with images of hunting in between it and the sun. Click here to see it on a page.

This design was part of a carving in a piece of furniture found on the Oseberg ship; a ship buried near Oseberg, Norway, in the 9th century as part of the burial of two women (One of importance and her attendant). It is used on the page of the Kings of Finland.

Hugin and Munin (your guess is as good as mine as to which is which), the ravens who brought news to Odin from around the world, from 8th century bronze harness mounts.

Yggdrasill, the world tree, being gnawed on by deer and other creatures; from a Viking-age carving from Urnes, Norway. See it used on a page of Danes.

This was a piece of Norse Jewelry. I'm not sure where it is from or the time in history.

These and the next five are all from the Oseberg Ship. This was a wood carving of a snake on the prow of the ship, but I made it look more metalic for the images above.
