Widukind was a leader in Saxon Germany and one of the main opponents of Charlemagne. He was a noble and leader of the Saxon resistance to the Frankish invasion, and often given the title "dux (duke)", but his actual position and title are not known. His name literally translates to "child of the wood", (i.e. "wolf"), and is most likely not his real name. He is said to be the great-great-great-grandfather of Matilde of Ringleheim, and we have added the "unknown" generation to make the proper number; the exact connection is not known.
