Henry was not intended to inherit any land. He was so hated by his brothers that they vowed to disinherit him, partly because he played them against each other during quarrels. England had been left to his brother, William Rufus, and Normany to his brother, Robert. Henry was reconciled with William, but while Robert was away on the First Crusade, William was "accidentally" killed by an arrow while he and Henry were hunting. Henry siezed the throne and, after four years of war, captured Robert and held him until he died, then controlling Normandy.

Henry reigned as king of England from 1100 to 1135 and as Duke of Normandy from 1106 to 1135. His reign is notable for important legal and administrative reforms, and for the final resolution of the investiture controversy. Abroad, he waged several campaigns in order to consolidate and expand his continental possessions. He issued a charter on which the Magna Carta was based, recalled Anselm, the exiled archbishop of Canterbury, and married Matilda, a descendant of the Anglo-Saxon kings, all to ease tension after his usurpation of the throne.
