David spent most of his early life in the court of King Henry I "Beauclerc" of England. Through his marriage to Maud he acquired the earldom of Huntingdon and lands in Northamptonshire. He issued the first Scottish coinage, and built or rebuilt the castles around which grew the first Scottish burghs: Edinburgh, Stirling, Berwick, Roxburgh, and perhaps Perth.

His name was Mael Coluim Ceann Mor (Malcolm "Big Head" or "Great Chief"). He lived in exile in England after his father's murder. After the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, Malcolm gave refuge to the Anglo-Saxon prince, Edgar the Atheling, and his sisters, one of whom became his second wife.

He acknowledged the overlordship of William I in 1072, but later made five raids into English territory. He was killed during the fifth raid by the forces of King William II Rufus.

William inherited the earldom of Northumberland in 1152, but had to relinquish it in 1157 to King Henry II. In 1173 he joined a revolt of Prince Henry's (his father) sons to regain the earldom and was captured near Alnwick, Northumberland. He was released in 1174 after agreeing to recognize the overlordship of England and the supremacy of the English church over the Scottish church (the Treaty of Falaise signed 8 December 1174). Upon King Henry's death William was released from fuedal subjection by paying a large sum of money to King Richard I, who then recognized the independence of Scotland in 1189 (the Quitclaim of Canterbury, 5 December 1189). Pope Celestine III ruled in 1192 that the Scottish church owed obedience only to Rome, not England. In 1209 King John forced William to renounce his claim to the earldom of Northumberland.

William had several concubines including an Isabel de Avenel and a Miss Hythus. Another source listed William and Isabel de Avenel as being married.
