William inherited the earldom of Northumberland in 1152, but had to relinquish it in 1157 to King Henry II. In 1173 he joined a revolt of Prince Henry's (his father) sons to regain the earldom and was captured near Alnwick, Northumberland. He was released in 1174 after agreeing to recognize the overlordship of England and the supremacy of the English church over the Scottish church (the Treaty of Falaise signed 8 December 1174). Upon King Henry's death William was released from fuedal subjection by paying a large sum of money to King Richard I, who then recognized the independence of Scotland in 1189 (the Quitclaim of Canterbury, 5 December 1189). Pope Celestine III ruled in 1192 that the Scottish church owed obedience only to Rome, not England. In 1209 King John forced William to renounce his claim to the earldom of Northumberland.
