In 1326 Isabella left England for France with her son Edward to try to mend the rift between France and England. She failed, but refused to return to Edward II. Instead she raised an army with her lover, Lord Roger Mortimer, and marched on London. She succeeded in deposing Edward II and placing Edward III on the throne, though he was controlled by Isabella and Roger Mortimer. At least until his eighteenth birthday.

Henry's father, King John, had Henry crowned king before his own death to ensure the line of succession. John had faught with King Louis VII of France for the crown, and his great grandmother, Matilda the Empress, had faught with her cousin Stephen to claim the throne for her son, Henry II. Since Henry was only nine years old when he was crowned king, William I Marshall was elected regent at the age of seventy. Following Marshall's death in 1219, Hubert de Burgh, the chief justiciar became regent until 1227.

Henry made large grants to his wife's family and conducted an unsuccessful war in France, which angered the nobles. A group led by Simon de Montfort, Henry's brother-in-law, coerced Henry to accept the Provisions of Oxford. He repudiated his signature on the document in 1261 and the matter was arbitrated by King Louis IX of France, who declared in 1264 that the provisions were invalid. But the Baron's War (1263-1265) broke out in the mean time. In a battle near Lewes on May 14, 1264, Henry and his son Edward were captured, and Simon de Montfort summoned a Parliament in 1265 made of two citizens from each borough and two knights from each shire. It was known as the Model Parliament, and was the forerunner of the modern body.

Prince Edward escaped later in 1265 and, with the help of Llewelyn ap Gruffydd, Prince of North Wales, defeated and killed Simon at Evesham. Henry was restored to the throne, but had very little control over the government.

Henry fought a series of wars with Louis VII of France, former husband of his wife, Eleanor, over his possessions in France. He received back from Scotland the northern counties in England, and made three successful expeditions into Wales in 1157, 1163, and 1165. To bring the clergy under control he summoned a council which adopted the Constitution of Clarendon, which caused conflict with Thomas a Becket. He also innaugurated the Assize of Clarendon in 1166, the Assize of Arms in 1181, and the Assize of Woodstock in 1184.

In 1171 Henry launched his campaign against Ireland under the leadership of Richard "Strongbow" de Clare.
