Edmund received the nickname "Ironside" for his efforts to fend off the Danish invasion led by King Canute Sveinsson. Edmund had little support from the English people, especially those from Southampton. Edmund was defeated by Canute on October 18, 1016, at Ashington in Essex. The two kings reached an agreement where Edmund would hold Wessex, while Canute would hold the lands north of the Thames. If one of the kings should die, the other would inherit their lands. Although the official cause of death for Edmund is listed as natural causes, some speculate that Canute had him assassinated by someone hiding in a privy, who stabbed him in the bowels. Upon Edmund's death, Canute became king of all England.

Ethelred's old English name, Aethelraed, means "well advised", and the nickname "unraed" means "without council" or "indecisive". Ethelred dealt with many Viking invasions during his reign. Most he dealt with by paying off the raders, which later became known as Danegeld. He ordered the massacre of the Danes living in England on St. Brice's Day (November 13) in 1002. This massacre prompted Sven "Fork-Beard", King of Denmark (though he had been run out of Denmark by Erik the Victorious) to begin an ernest attempt to conquer England.

Ethelred fled to Normandy in 1013 to seek protection from his brother-in-law, Robert of Normandy. After the death of Sven Fork-Beard in 1014, Ethelred returned to England.

Ethelred introduced many reforms to the government of Anglo-Saxon England. He introduced Shire Reeves or Sheriffs, and the economy during his reign was healthy.

Edgar took the kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia from his brother, Edwy, in 958, but didn't officially succeed as king of Mercia until his brother's death. Other than that conflict, Edgar's reign was a peaceful one. It is Edgar who consolidated England into a unified state with little chance of it receding back into its constituent parts.

Although Edgar became king in 959, he was not crowned until 973 in a ceremony intended as the culmination of his reign. This is the basis of the current coronation ceremony in Britain. Six kings in Britain arrived at the ceremony in Chester to pledge their allegiance to the King of England.

The Gesta Regum Anglorum by William of Malmesbury described Edgar as "extremely small both in stature and bulk..."
