Ralph was made governor of Edinburgh Castle on 11 June 1291. Some claims have been made that Ralph was the second Lord Basset of Drayton; the first being his father who was named Baron of Drayton by Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. However, a 20th century British court ruled that Montfort's appointments were invalid.

Ralph joined Simon de Montfort's baronial rebellion against King Henry III. He died at the Battle of Evesham at the side of Montfort when Montfort urged him to flee but he refused. His lands were seized due to this rebellion, but later returned to his widow whose father was a royalist.
