Thomas was made Earl of Surrey on 28 June 1483, the same day as his father was made Duke of Norfolk. He was also sworn to the Privy Council and made a member of the Order of the Garter. Following the death of his father and King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, Thomas was attainted by the new king, Henry VII. He was stripped of his lands and spent the next three years in the Tower of London.
After refusing an opportunity to escape in 1487, Thomas regained the king's trust and was restored to the Earldom of Surrey. He made his loyalty and military skill known to the king at every opportunity, leading to his advancement. He was made Lord High Treasurer in 1501, and conducted many diplomatic missions including escorting Margaret Tudor to Scotland for her marriage to King James IV and negotiated Catherine of Aragon's marriage to Arthur, Prince of Wales.
While the king was in Calais in 1513 James IV launched an attack. Howard soundly defeated the much larger Scottish army at Flodden, becoming a national hero and earning many rewards. Among them was the new creation of Duke of Norfolk on 1 February 1514.
In 1522 Howard resigned as Lord High Treasurer and retired to Framlingham Castle. He was buried 22 June at Thetford Priory. His funeral was said to have cost over £1300 and involved a procession of 400 hooded men bearing torches and a bier covered with 100 wax effigies and 700 candles. The Howard tombs were moved to the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Framlingham after the dissolution of Thetford Priory.

Elizabeth was a lady-in-waiting to Queen consort Elizabeth Woodville and Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen's daughter, Elizabeth of York. She was joint godmother to Princess Margaret Tudor. John Skelton's poem The Garlande of Laurell was written about her after he visited the Howard home at Sheriff Hutton Castle.
Elizabeth's first husband was killed at the Battle of Barnet on 14 April 1471. They had three children together: John, Margaret, and Anne.
Following Elizabeth's death, she was buried in the nun's choir of the Convent of the Minoresses outside Aldgate. Her widower Thomas Howard married her cousin, Agnes.

John succeeded his father in 1436. He was elected to Parliament in 1449 and held several offices. He was a supporter of the House of York during the War of the Roses and was knighted by King Edward IV at the Battle of Towton on 29 March 1461. That same year he became High Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk. In September 1468 Howard was appointed Treasurer of the Royal Household.
John was summoned to Parliament on 15 October 1470 and made Lord Howard. On 24 April 1472 he joined the Order of the Garter. He bore the royal banner at the funeral of Edward IV in 1483 and supported Richard's usurpation of the throne, for which he was made Lord High Steward. Howard bore the crown before Richard at his coronation, while his son Thomas carried the Sword of State, and was made 1st Duke of Norfolk, third creation, on 28 June 1483.
He was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field by a Lancastrian arrow to the face. His death demoralized his close friend King Richard III, who also died in the battle. He was buried in Thetford Priory, but his remains were moved to the Church of St. Michael in Framlingham, Norfolk, during the Reformation.

John Grey was involved in the siege of Caerlaverock Castle in July 1300 where his arms were recorded in the Roll of Caerlaverock as (translated into modern standard heraldic language) Barry of six argent and azure a bend engrailed gules. Yet in St. George's Roll it was Barry of six argent and azure overall a bend indented gules. It is not known if the correct depiction was engrailed or indented, but it is not considered important due to the lack of descendants recorded as using it. Since the 19th century indented has been accepted as correct.
Grey served in Parliament from 1309 to 1322, was appointed Lord Ordainer in 1310, and was granted Ruthin Castle in 1311. He was at the Battle of Bannockburn, and served as governor of Caernarfon Castle.
